SNL Mocks Trump and Tucker Carlson for Backing Putin in Ukraine
After kick off this week’s show with a somber note, Saturday night live avoid trying to make a laugh out of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—until Colin Jost and Michael Che take the stage for “Weekend Update.”
Jost began: “President Putin launched the offensive with support from allies like Belarus and Tucker Carlson. “Many analysts were surprised that Putin passed it even though it was clearly a huge mistake. But he couldn’t back down from all that he had accumulated. Just like how NBC still has to go through when it comes to broadcasting the Winter Olympics. ”
Meanwhile, Che lamented that “this is a difficult subject to make fun of,” adding, “I mean, in my life I’ve seen footage of attacks like this on countries different, but never a white scene.”
“I don’t know much about this whole situation, but I have a close friend who is Russian and I asked her what she thought of it,” he continued. “And she said, ‘Michael, you don’t pay me to talk, honey.'”
To all Ukrainian citizens – including celebrities – volunteering to fight against Russia, the comedian couldn’t imagine it happening here, joking, “If you ever read the news that Michael Che was in an American war, we have just lost that war.”
And finally, Jost notes that “Donald Trump praised Vladimir Putin’s move into Ukraine, saying, ‘This is a genius.’ Even so, ‘This is genius’ is also his way of sarcastically introducing Eric. “
