One The missing Afghan infant After his desperate parents hand him over to a soldier amid frantic evacuation efforts outside Kabul airport over the summer it’s finally been identified.

Sohail Ahmadi has been missing since August 19. Reuters reported on Saturday that the boy had been found after being cared for by a taxi driver in Kabul for the past few months.

“The baby was placed in Kabul, where a 29-year-old taxi driver named Hamid Safi found him at the airport and brought him in. After more than seven weeks of negotiations and pleas, and ultimately in the custody of the Taliban police, Safi finally handed the child over to his boisterous grandfather and other relatives still in Kabul,” Reuters wrote.

Sohail’s father, a security guard at the US Embassy, handed the baby over the airport wall to a soldier as the family tried to evacuate during the summer Taliban takeover. He said he hoped to protect the baby from being crushed to death in the huge crowd and expected to bring it back when they reached the entrance, but was nowhere to be found.

Work is currently underway for Sohail to reunite with his parents, both of whom are currently in the US after evacuating from Kabul.

A US government agency employee involved in Sohail’s case told The Daily Beast that the government was involved in efforts to reunite the baby with the family.

“The case of this missing child was brought to the attention of the US government again in October, more than two months after the child went missing. After a few weeks of inter-agency communication, government officials became frustrated as their search hit a dead end. However, some have continued to follow the search to this day,” said the officer in charge, who requested anonymity because telling the media about an investigation went against the government’s policy. their organization’s books.

The officer in charge added that “it was frustrating because, after this incident brought back media attention in November, we quickly learned of the whereabouts of the baby, but it appears there is no agency.” who would do anything to help bring the baby back to the family. It may seem like the federal government is waiting for NGOs to step in, but the stress and pain of waiting for an update keeps increasing. I am very happy that the baby is returned to his loved ones, but I hope the US government can help bring this baby to the United States with the parents where he belongs.”

Dr Saman Hamidi-Azar, president of the task force for unaccompanied children in Afghanistan refugee relief who was involved in the infant’s case in October, told The Daily Beast, “I so grateful to all those who have come together to help bring Sohali closer to his parents’ reunion I would like to extend my due thanks to the individuals who were actually involved in this process as he was in the palm of his hand. and the arms of his parents.

Sohail’s mother, Suraya, who was then living with her husband, Mirza, and their four other children at an Afghan refugee camp at Fort Bliss in Texas and has since resettled to Michigan, spoke to The Daily Beast in November about the agony she went through while being away from her young child.

“It’s a deep pain and I can’t describe it,” she said. “I feel deep inside the loss and I am waiting to be back with him. I’m praying he comes back to me… it’s a nightmare. ”

The Daily Beast did not receive comment from the State Department or Sohail’s parents at the time of publication.
