Pictures of this rare phenomenon have gone viral social media. A user named Alan Dyer shared pictures of the rare event on Twitter. He also wrote, “A great performance by @STEVEPhenomena last night, August 7-8, electrifying the sky and showing his green fingers for a brief period of about 2 minutes. STEVE lasts about 40 minutes, appearing as the northern Kp5 aurora subsides. This is 12:30 a.m. MDT from southern Alberta.”

What is STEVE?

“STEVE,” which stands for Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement, typically occurs as the northern lights fade. It lasted about 40 minutes. Discovered in 2016 by Canadian citizen scientists, STEVE is thought to be caused by the same atmospheric disturbances that cause the aurora glow. has this to say about STEVE, “Appearing as a giant lilac band of light running across the night sky, it’s accompanied by vivid auroras visible in southern Canada and other parts of the country. Although it looks and behaves like the aurora borealis, it is an unknown phenomenon.” NASA explains that it is “a purple ribbon in the sky, with a row structure. green barrier below. According to NASA, auroras are created when matter from the fast-moving sun hits Earth’s magnetosphere. Charged particles escape from Sun storm collided with the Earth and became trapped in magnetic lines of force in the atmosphere. Besides, some users also shared pictures of the aurora scene on Twitter. Dr Tamitha Skov, Space Weather Physicist has re-shared one of these aurora images from inside the car! Dr. Skov Tweet wrote, “WOW! Views of # aurora borealis like this could happen again tonight in Canada and the upper US if conditions remain the same.” She suggested that the geomagnetic storm caused by the last solar storm is now close to the current G1-class solar storm due to the southward field maintained in this fast solar wind, which is the highest class of solar storms.
