Some good news on climate change (and fact check)

However, when we take a close look at energy and emissions data around the world, we can see that there is some good news and a lot of potential progress ahead.

For example, renewable sources make up an increasing share of the energy supply, and they get cheaper every year. Countries are setting new emissions reduction targets and unprecedented public investments can usher in more technological advancements.

Read on to find out why there are at least a few reasons to be hopeful.

While emissions will reach new heights in 2022, the peak is already in sight.

Emissions from fossil fuel sources are higher than ever in 2022, according to data from Global Carbon Project. Annual global growth is just over 1%, continuing to recover from the 2020 lows caused by the covid-19 pandemic. Overall, emissions have doubled over the past 40 years.

But while emissions are increasing globally, many countries have seen their own stabilization or start to decline. The US remission peaked in 2005 and has fallen just over 10% since. Russia, Japan and the European Union have also seen steady emissions.

Global emissions are expected to peak around 2025, according to report International Energy Agency. Reaching maximum annual emissions is an important milestone, the first step in turning the ship of the greenhouse gas metaphor.

But emissions are still rising in a number of countries, including China (currently the world’s top emitter) and India, both of which have growing populations and economies. China’s rise is particularly pronounced, with emissions nearly doubling in the past 15 years.

The Chinese government has commit that the country will peak emissions by 2030 and reach net zero emissions by 2060. The peak could come earlier, in 2025 or before, according to analysis by CarbonBrief. The country is deploying renewable energy at a record rate, nearly quadrupling its installations over the past decade.
