Sony Pictures Classics Buys ‘A Winter’s Journey’ Animated Feature – The Hollywood Reporter
Sony Pictures Classics has selected A Winter’s Journey, an upcoming live-action animated film from British director Alex Helfrecht (White King).
SPC pre-purchased the film for North America, Latin America, the Middle East, Scandinavia, Australia/New Zealand, Turkey, India, South Africa, Southeast Asia, Japan and Thailand, as well as receiving the airline rights. not worldwide.
An adaptation of Winterreise, Franz Schubert’s Classical Song Cycle, Winter’s Journey Set in Bavaria in 1812 and follow the wanderings of a lovelorn poet who undertakes a life-or-death hike through mountains, ice and snow. The film will begin principal photography in Poland in June with a cast that includes John Malkovich, Jason Isaacs, Czech actor Marcin Czarnik (Saul’s Son), Germany’s Martina Gedeck (Other people’s lives) and Olafur Darri Olafsson (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald). Baritone Andrè Schuen and pianist Daniel Heide will perform the soundtrack, which will be released by Deutsche Grammophon.
Winter’s Journey will mix live action with CGI and drawn animation from the team behind the Oscar-nominated film Love Vincent (2017). The world in the film will be the first to be built using PlayStation’s Dreams technology, developed by PlayStation Studios BAFTA-winning game studio Media Molecule.
Jörg Tittel and Philip Munger at London-based Oiffy are producing, with Sean Bobbitt and Hugh Welchman through Poland-based BreakThru Films, Reinhard Brundig at Germany’s Pandora Film group, Benoit Roland’s Wrong Men North in Belgium , Raphaël Berdugo and Alexis Perrin in France and Richard Mansell. Sebastien Barrillier and Yann Duboux are executive producers.
Sony’s deal was negotiated with Paris-based mk2 Films, which is handling the international sales.
