South Korea reports daily record number of Covid-19 infections

South Korea SeongJoon Cho/Bloomberg via Getty Images recorded 5,123 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, a record number in a single day, according to a bulletin from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (KDCA).

KDCA said 5,075 new infections were locally transmitted, 4,110 were detected in the Seoul Metropolitan Area.

The country also reported 34 more deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 3,658, according to the KDCA. The KDCA added that about 723 patients are in critical condition.

South Korea has now reported a total of 452,350 cases.

As of Wednesday, 82.9% of the population had received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and 79.9% were fully immunized, the KDCA said.

Suspected cases of Omicron: South Korea is investigating at least two suspected cases of the Omicron variant, with results due on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Korean Ministry of Health and the KDCA will form a task force together with relevant ministries to deal with the Omicron variant.
