An enormous Jupiter-like planet that survived the cataclysmic demise of its star has supplied astronomers with a preview of the far way forward for our photo voltaic system.

The planet, referred to as MOA-2010-BLG-477Lb, was first noticed in 2010, however now Joshua Blackman on the College of Tasmania in Australia and his colleagues have confirmed that it orbits a white dwarf, the stellar remnant left when stars like our solar run out of gasoline to burn.
