‘Spider-Man’, ‘Sing 2’ Top Wednesday – The Hollywood Reporter

Sony’s Spider-Man: There’s no way home continued to dominate the box office on Wednesday, grossing $27.8 million and making life difficult for male-leaning Christmas pictures. Matrix Recovery and The King’s Man.

The Matrix and King’s Man both seasons join the holiday parade on Wednesday along with the Universal and Illumination animated film Sing 2, ranked best of the three new services with $8.1 million from 3,892 locations.

Warner Bros. Matrix Recovery followed in third place with an opening day total of about $6.5 million from 3,552 theaters. The Lana Wachowski-directed film is also available on HBO Max, potentially dwindling box office prospects. Overseas, where Resurrections is being released in brick-and-mortar theaters, it has grossed $18.9 million to date.

Long-delayed Matthew Vaughn King’s Man division of 20th Century and Disney, came in at No. 4 with a muted opening day total of $2.2 million from 3,180 theaters.

The corridor between Christmas and New Year has historically been a huge boon for movie-watching, but box office revenue – beyond Spider-Man: There’s no way home – has not yet fully recovered from the pandemic. And worries about the developing omicron variation don’t help.

There is no way home ended Sunday with a staggering domestic gross of $356.5 million, the best six-day total in Sony history and the third-biggest of any film, and over 813 billion dollars worldwide. The film will soon become the first film of the pandemic era to hit the $1 billion mark.

It’s too early to predict when these four movies will land on Sunday.

Spiderman sure to provide the biggest cheers after scoring the second-biggest opening goal of all time last weekend with a domestic gross of $260 million.

Sing 2, the sequel to the 2016 film, is a robo-vocal comedy film voiced by returning stars Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Nick Kroll, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, and Nick Offerman. Newcomers include Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Pharrell Williams, Letitia Wright and Bono.

Matrix Recovery hopes to revive the franchise that has been dormant for a long time and is set 60 years after the events of Matrix Revolution (2003). Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lambert Wilson and Jada Pinkett Smith all return, while new stars include Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Christina Ricci.

The King’s Man is the third title in the British spy series, and a prequel of 2014 Kingsman: Secret Service. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans and Djimon Hounsou.
