Spooky review: Ana de Armas, the Chris Evans action rom-com has a big surprise

the spectrethird film starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas (after Pull out the knife And gray man), is a featherweight movie. The fact that it’s slick, light, and often ridiculous isn’t necessarily a problem, more than that it’s a problem for Lost City or High speed train — it’s an easy diversion of the evening, an ordinary mind-relaxation that requires nothing but the complete removal of the intellect and a willingness to completely set aside reality in a few hours. But there’s only one right way to watch it, and most people won’t, because it’s not really easy to do. The best way to enjoy the spectre is to enter completely blindly.

One of the things that makes Rocket Man director Dexter Fletcher’s action rom-com is so lighthearted that there are hardly any twists or turns to the matter. The most important thing comes in the first act, and it’s included in the film’s premise — it’s in every description of the movie, and even in its tagline. And it’s something that you can discover by watching the movie much better than reading about it first. Much as Big reveal about ‘s villain Terminator 2a turning point in the spectre was spoiled in the marketing materials from the start, which is unfortunate, given how clearly the film is designed to hide it and reveal it at the opportune moment for maximum impact. .

For viewers trying to stay calm, suffice it to say that the film focuses on two people — Cole (Chris Evans) and Sadie (Ana de Armas) — who meet at the farmers market, having an uncomfortable conversation. with wasps is inevitable. Don’t register as flirting until the other person explains that they’re flirting, and then move on much more agreeable Before the Rising Sun/rye lane-style day walking and talking stretch. They then learn more about each other than they bargained for, and their jokes return sour and edgy for much of the film’s length, amid loud, often awkward action scenes that can CG support.

At the level that anyone would talk about the spectre a week from now, it will likely be about the harsh, reprehensible aspects of Cole and Sadie’s relationship, for which the four-person scripting team — Deadpool And spider head Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick And Tom Holland Spider-Man Trilogy writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers – apparently hoping to play lovingly sharp. (Ha ha, these two beauties really hate each other, to the point of teasing, manipulating, cursing each other! So cute! They will definitely get back together!) Instead, it becomes a strange game of “Who is more wrong in this scene?”

It’s hard to take sides in this particular confrontation, given how the central couple is portrayed. Cole, easily one of the least convincing movie farmers to ever humbly run an organic greens stall at a farmers market, completely dominated by his strangely over-involved family. (Tate Donovan and Amy Sedaris as his parents, his way Lizze Broadway- his too-in-love-teen sister). He’s also carefree, self-aggrandizing, whimsical, prone to making bad decisions, and has plenty of excuses for all of the above. For her part, Sadie is a collection of sharp contradictions that barely make for a coherent character. The fact that they both recognize each other’s flaws so accurately and profoundly and point them out doesn’t make them any more attractive – if at all, it’s a bit of a shame that they both immediately see each other so clearly.

The French bad guy Leveque (Adrien Brody) looms in front of Wagner (Mike Moh) in Ghosted

The film’s saving grace is that none of this is presented as particularly important, or meant to be considered valuable. A Wilhelm scream during the film’s first major action sequence is a suggestion the filmmakers thought was all rather silly. So there was a moment where Reese and Wernick basically gave up on themselves from the very beginning. Deadpool, in which a generic mook, detaching from his vehicle and cruising through the air to impending death, enters a state of extreme slow motion for eye contact with wide eyes, desperate for Cole . So is Adrien Brody ovair-zee-top Fronch accsont as Leveque, the main antagonist of the film. This is a romantic comedy, formulaic, laid back and cool, with some action pitfalls, but without the expectation that anyone needs to care about the outcome of that action.

Instead of, the spectre fills the air with adorable kicks, as de Armas spins and shoots in sequence, while Evans seems to be in high spirits as he plays the unlucky tagalong. (“I swallowed a rock,” he groans after one fall down a hill.) The film also fills the space with cameos — another reason to watch it blindly, as So every familiar face that appears can be a surprise. At times, the film plays out like a class reunion with a loose narrative, a dynamic that adds interest without messing with the film’s already questionable reality.

Well, there are plenty of reasons why people might not want to get in on a film that lacks humor, this oral satire, which comes with its own weight. That’s all the more reason for those who want to watch it not to be burdened with expectations. There’s not much to do the spectre, in addition to watching some of the charismatic actors twist their image around in delightfully humorous ways, while playing fetch McGuffin through a flimsy and unbelievable storyline. They all seemed to have appeared as if it were a casual date, a fun time that they didn’t need to prepare and plan in advance. Viewers will enjoy the spectre more if they take the same approach.
