Stanley Cup Finals: Golden Knights take 2-0 lead over Panthers

Jonathan Marchessault scored twice and started an early blitz in pursuit of the NHL’s hottest post-season goalkeeper, and Adin Hill continued to excel as the Vegas Golden Knights took control of the Stanley Cup Finals with a win 7-2 ahead of the Florida Panthers to take the second night’s 2-0 series lead.

Hill made 29 saves and Marchessault had one assist to finish with three points. His 12 post-season goals set a Golden Knights record, all of which came after the first round.

Brett Howden scored twice for the Knights, who also had goals from Alec Martinez, Nicolas Roy and Michael Amadio. Six players had at least two points for Vegas, all 18 Knights figure skaters were on the ice to score even goals and their nine goalscorers in the first two games were a record Stanley Cup Finals. The Knights’ seven goals tied the franchise to a knockout.

That was too much for Panthers goalkeeper Sergei Bobrovsky, who was knocked out 7:10 in the second half 4-0. This is the fifth time in 12 games the Knights have chased the opposing goalkeeper.

Matthew Tkachuk and Anton Lundell scored for Florida.

The teams that had a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals were 31-3 in the open era. The Panthers will attempt to beat history starting in Game 3 on Thursday in Sunrise, Florida.

Hill once again delivers his temper as well as his A-game. He intercepted Carter Verhaeghe in a breakaway in the first, and then, during that interval, he hit Tkachuk, who was in his net, with his interceptor and then he cut him with a stick.

The Knights soon prevailed, leading 2-0 in the first half thanks to goals from Marchessault and Martinez. It was Vegas’ third game in a row with a power play goal, the first such game since Christmas week.

The Panthers lost their biggest, toughest defender early in the game when Radko Gudas was injured after a hit from Vegas forward Ivan Barbashev. Gudas left at 6:39 and did not return.

It was one of the great successes of Barbashev, the largest acquisition in the trading term of the Golden Knights, Stanley Cup champions with St. Louis in 2019. Barbashev broke Colorado defender Samuel Girard’s sternum during last year’s playoffs, also in a clean sheet.

Vegas has its own fears at the end of the second period when Jack Eichel is nailed to the right shoulder by Tkachuk. Eichel returned in the third half and scored the second for Marchessault.
