Star Citizen crowdfunding has reached a new milestone, as Cloud Imperium Games has now raised over $500 million for its development. The original game begins Kickstarter crowdfunding effort in October 2012quickly accumulated over $2 million on that platform and started a trend that has seen it regularly accumulate more cash over the years.
As discovered by Eurogamer, total investment is currently $500,121,052 from over 4 million backers, at the time of writing. It is worth noting here that Star Citizen reaches 400 million USD last November, which means $100 million in funding has accrued over the past 10 months alone.
After a decade of development, Star Citizen is in alpha, and a final release date for the full game launch has yet to be revealed. The alpha build contains some features, spaceships and locations to explore, but is highly anticipated 42 Squadron single-player campaign has yet to materialize. Star Citizen’s single-player adventure is one that fans have been waiting for years now and stars some of the big-name actors in the story like Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, and Gillian Anderson.
The development is not controversial, however, as Cloud Imperium ran into trouble last year with the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over delivery ads for sale are not playable or even viewable in-game.
Cloud Imperium is also starting to limit the amount of details it shares in its community roadmaps, with explanation studio that its “most passionate players” saw these features as promises and became increasingly annoyed when these goals were delayed and moved to later dates.
