Strange repeating fast radio burst (FRB) originating from distant galaxy discovered by scientists

The discovery of a novel and fast radio burst originating in a galaxy located 3 billion light-years away has bewildered astronomers. Fast Radio Bursts or FRBs are beams of radio waves in space that are milliseconds long. Usually, these radio bursts occur and do not repeat. However, in the latest observation, the radio burst was found to be repetitive. An object called FRB 190520 was discovered by astronomers when it emitted a burst of radio waves on May 20, 2019.

It is located using the 5 Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) in China. Then the radio appeared in telescope data for November of that year.

When additionally observing FRB 190520 with FAST, astronomers noticed that it emitted frequently repeating radio waves, unlike other FRBs. The findings are part of new report published in the journal Nature.

In 2020, the team of scientists used the National Science Foundation’s Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and other telescopes to determine its origin. After the VLA determined the location of the object, the Subaru Telescope in Hawaii helped get a clearer image. Subaru’s observations of visible light suggest that the explosion originated on the outskirts of a dwarf star Galaxy located 3 billion light years away. In addition, it has been noted that the object emits constant but weaker radio waves between bursts.

According to Casey Law, a radio astrophysicist at the California Institute of Technology and a co-author of the study, “These features make this look very similar to the first FRB whose location has been determined. identified – also by the VLA – – back in 2016..” The 2016 object, known as FRB 121102, also emitted the same combination of repeated outbursts as the one observed in FRB 190520. “Now Now we have two objects like this, and that raises some important questions,” Law said.

The latest discovery has astronomers speculating whether there are two types of fast radio bursts. Astronomers believe that FRBs such as FRB 190520 could be explored for use as a tool to study mid-range materials. The earth and they.
