Stranger helps homeless woman, daughter

“They gave me two shelters. One shelter was not accessible to the disabled. The second shelter was closed,” Lagoo-McKinnie said.

She said her battle with depression peaked five years ago when she jumped from the 35th Street bridge.

She currently uses a wheelchair.

Lagoo-McKinnie said: “I suffered a great loss and maybe I should go and get help, but I didn’t.

There was no shelter in Milwaukee that could accommodate her disability, and her daughter she accepted a spot at the Salvation Army shelter in Sheboygan.

Feeling isolated, she reached out GoFundMe ask for help.

Ashley said she was grateful for the shelter to have a place to spend the night, but like many shelters, residents had to go elsewhere during the day.

She would spend her days on the streets of Sheboygan or inside the public library.

At times, she and Leanna felt as if they were against the world.

After a few weeks alone and feeling isolated, she turned to GoFundMe for help.

And then the world showed them they were not alone.

GoFundMe totals are now more than $83,000 as of Wednesday afternoon.

Lagoo-McKinnie said: “If I buy a house, she will be arranged. If anything happens to me, she will have a place. She will have a permanent home”, Lagoo-McKinnie said. McKinnie said. “And face this fortune. Pray that nothing bad, or like everything, I just want everything good, where I have a simple life.”

She said a company in Sheboygan was assisting her in finding a job and now she knows she is there and enrolls Leanna in the school.

Lagoo-McKinnie told WISN 12 she was working with a real estate agent in Sheboygan but didn’t want to make any abrupt decisions.

Now she can afford to take her time.
