Stream leads on all platforms in first time using US TV – The Hollywood Reporter

Streaming services hit a fifth consecutive high in terms of market share of all services using TV in July – and ranked as the most-watched platform on the television landscape for the first time.

TV people overtook cable for the month, accounting for nearly 35 percent (34.8 percent to be exact) of all TV usage in the United States, according to Nielsen’s monthly Gauge platform rankings. This is up more than one percentage point from June’s 33.7%. Streaming usage has been growing on a monthly basis since March, averaging about one point per month.

July highs boosted by Netflix Strange things – hit 18 billion minutes of watch time in a month – and other big titles including Oh Academy and Boys. Streamers have increased by more than six shares compared to July 2021 (28.3 percent to 34.8 percent), an increase of nearly 23 percent.

Nielsen’s figures also run counter to more bleak reports from media companies in recent weeks. Netflix dropped nearly a million subscribers worldwide in the second quarter of the year, and Warner Bros. Discovery is doing post-merger layoffs and cutting some shows from HBO Max as it prepares to combine that service and nonfiction-focused Discovery+ next year.

Meanwhile, cable (34.4% use TV) and broadcast (21.6%), both scored their lowest scores in the 14 months that Nielsen published its platform rankings. Cable is down about 9% from the same time a year ago, while broadcast networks are down 10%. There’s some buzz in that comparison – the Tokyo Olympics and the delayed NBA and NHL playoffs were broadcast on TV and cable channels a year ago – but both platforms have a downward trend for several months, coinciding with a steady rise in streaming.

Other TV usage, including gaming, physical media playback, and streaming from set-top boxes (excluding individual streaming services), accounted for 9.2% of total TV usage. remaining use in July.

Netflix is ​​the top personal streamer with 8% of total TV usage. YouTube (7.3 percent), Hulu (3.6 percent) and Amazon Prime Video (3 percent) all improved month-on-month, while Disney+ (1.8 percent) fell slightly. HBO Max is steady at 1 percent.
