Subaru kills the WRX STI as we know it

Subaru Corp. won’t offer a new-generation WRX STI that uses the current car’s architecture – although the firm has yet to make a decision to return the badge in electrified form.

It means a nameplate dating back to 1994, four generations back, deep frozen.

Sad news for protest enthusiasts around the world – most likely still Mourning the death of the Lancer Evo – Subaru says it simply cannot create a new STI in today’s landscape. In other words, it needs to cut its overall emissions.

Somewhat unusually, a company statement appeared on the US media site, but not on their global press page (at the time of writing anyway).

“As the automotive market continues to move towards electrification, Subaru is focused on how our future performance and sports cars will evolve to meet the needs of the changing market. as well as regulations and requirements for greenhouse gases, zero-emission vehicles, and Enterprise Average Fuel Economy,” the company said.

“…The next generation internal combustion engine WRX STI will not be built on the new WRX platform.”

News means New generation WRX sedan and wagon – the second sold overseas as the Levorg – will have to top Subaru’s performance list, alongside the second-generation BRZ coupe.

The company’s US arm, however, has hinted that the nameplate could return on something electrified, possibly a BEV or hybrid in place of the famous turbocharged four-wheel drive.

“The Subaru Corporation is exploring opportunities for the next-generation Subaru WRX STI, including electrification,” it said.

Subaru recently revealed its performance EV plans with Solterra STI . concept, based on the upcoming Toyota hybrid electric SUV. It also reveals concept STI E-RA maniaan 800kW four-motor racer with a proprietary four-wheel torque vectoring system.

Subaru may temporarily expand its range of STI Performance Parts, declaring: “We also look forward to incorporating the essence of the STI into our next generation of vehicles.”
