District 7 Officer Kyle Negrin answered a call from a woman in labor in a van on Francis Mooney Drive in Ridge around 7 p.m. on December 24.
Chelsea Anderson, 28, of Middle Island, was scheduled to have a caesarean section after the umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s neck.
However, the baby had other plans.
“It was a very unexpected delivery,” she said. “I was very nervous, very scared, especially having the umbilical cord wrapped around my neck three times.”

The Ridge Fire Department ambulance arrived, and Negrin joined Nurse Eric Ramirez in the back.
They were about 5 minutes from Stony Brook University Hospital when baby Avion arrived, Negrin and Ramirez had successfully removed the umbilical cord.
“They say five minutes, and it’s like when you have to use the bathroom and you’re close to home,” Anderson said. “You really have to get as close to you as possible.”
Thanks to their efforts, both Anderson and his son are healthy.
“It’s certainly an honor,” Negrin said. “Probably the proudest moment of my entire career taking Avion.”
And he’s had a pretty good career. At 32, he has spent eight years as a police officer, an EMT trained since the age of 18 and an experienced father of three.
Avion already has a big brother, Asher, but the best part – a guardian angel in Officer Negrin – who says he just feels lucky in a career that often involves tragedy.
“Whether it’s a fatal car crash, a shooting, a lot of negativity that the police have to deal with, this is something nice and a good feeling to deal with,” he said. speak.
