One of the makers behind Summer of the Soul (… Or, when the revolution can’t be televised)awarded the Oscar for best documentary shortly after Will Smith attacked Chris Rock on stage, took to social media Wednesday not only to criticize Smith for his actions, but also Rock for a joke he made about the team when they won.
Summer of the soul director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and producers Joseph Patel, Robert Fyvolent and David Dinerstein had the impossible task of stepping on stage to accept the award while the entire Dolby Theater was still reeling from shock as Smith rushed onto the stage and assaulted Rock just before.
On Wednesday night, Patel was on Twitter to talk about what happened right after the slap and then his team collected their Oscars, explaining that he was “angry” not just at Smith for “robbing” the entire moment category its but also with Rock for a joking joke that incorrectly described the producers as “four white boys”, which he said wiped out his track record.
Patel, who wrote that he was speaking “just for me and me. Neither Ahmir nor our co-producers,” began his Twitter line detailing that he’s been “drunk with joy” for the past few days, celebrating their Oscar win and he went to great lengths to thank everyone for their support and congratulations. He added that he is “still working on” the case between Smith and Rock.
“Once we realized the Chris Rock/Will Smith interaction wasn’t the same, everything turned upside down. People were still trying to understand that as Chris persevered and started reading the nominations,” wrote Patel.
“I think what Will did was selfish. It has robbed its moment category. It took the moment from other great and great films to have them credited for a POWERFUL year for the doc. And it stole Summer of the soul and our team in our moment. Is a loud, enthusiastic cheer for a popular movie,” added Patel.
Patel continued, “We were shocked when we walked onto the stage – not because of the victory but because we were still trying to understand what had happened. Then Will hugs Ahmir and knocks me down. I don’t even know it’s happening at the moment. Still in shock.”
The producer wrote that Thompson handled the moment gracefully, but with everything going on, he couldn’t hear what Rock was saying on stage.
“What I didn’t hear the moment I stepped on that stage but did hear back later is what Chris Rock said as he read our names from the winner’s card – The winner is”Summer of the soul… Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson and … 4 white boys. ‘ WHAT’S IN REAL CONTEST ???? ”

Patel went to explain his anger. “The reason I’m SO FUN is because I’m so proud to be one of the few South Asians to have ever won an Oscar in the awards’ history. I was so happy I was the 3RD South Asian to win that night – after [Riz Ahmed] and Aneil Karia won earlier in the night for Long goodbye. 3 South Asians win on the same night – it’s never happened before! And it makes a lot of sense! That’s history! ”
He added that Rock wasn’t even accurate when he said Thompson and “four white guys” won, since the film had only three producers – Patel, Fyvolent and Dinerstein.
Patel added that he “could be joking” but “not in that moment.” “What a terrible, disrespectful thing to do. AND THIS IS… It’s not Chris Rock being stressed out. He made a similar joke the night before on stage at Roots Jam! ”
The producer later wrote about his anger at various players over the incident, adding that he was “angry at Will Smith. Angry Chris Rock. Angry for me. Angry for Ahmir. Shame on my fellow filmmakers.”
He closed his thread by revealing that he couldn’t face seeing the ceremony again and “probably never will.” “Thank you, Chris – You bastard.”
“What both Will AND Chris did really colored what should have been a beautiful moment for us,” Patel wrote.
