Sunday, March 27, 2022 TV ratings – The Hollywood Reporter

The 94th Academy Awards drew a larger audience than last year’s least-watched Oscars ceremony ever. However, Sunday’s programming is still inferior to previous years because both TV and movie viewing have undergone radical changes recently.

The ABC’s broadcast of the Oscars was watched by 15.36 million people and rated 3.2 among adults 18-49, in fast-adjusted time zones on national ratings from Nielsen (metrics). original, unadjusted showed 13.73 million viewers and 2.9 in the primary ad demographic). They don’t include out-of-home viewing – although that will be included in the final issues of the day which will premiere on Tuesday morning – or streaming. Live broadcasters often (though not always) see their ratings adjusted upward once those factors are included.

However, the early numbers put Sunday’s show far ahead of the final numbers from last year’s miniature ceremony, which had an all-time low of 10.4 million viewers and 2.12 ratings. in the 18-49 demographic. Time zone-adjusted metrics show a 48% increase in total viewership and 18-49 year olds up 51% from last year’s final, with a 56% increase in viewership and 68% in demo vs. with the same numbers as last year (9.85 million and 1.9).

The Oscars join a number of other awards shows in stemming a drop in ratings from the 2020-21 season – although none have come close to the peak of pandemic preview levels. The Emmys and SAG Awards both have significant increases from their most recent outing, while the CMA Awards and American Music Awards (both on ABC) are either steady or up slightly from last year.

However, despite the year-to-year improvements, Sunday’s Oscars will drop as the second least-watched film since Nielsen began tracking total viewership in the mid-1990s. 1970. Before last year, the audience had never dropped below 20 million viewers.

The ABC broadcaster created a huge reaction on social media when Will Smith walked on stage and slapped host Chris Rock after the comedian joked about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. That’s about two-thirds of the way the ceremony lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes, by which time the audience had watched the show for about two and a half hours. (Data from analytics firm Samba TV shows Oscar attendance peaked about an hour earlier.)
