Super Bowl 2022 referee assigned: Ronald Torbert leads the executive team
The NFL has chosen its official team for Super Bowl 56.
The crew will include eight officials who have worked for the combined seven Super Bowls. Four of the officials, including referee Ronald Torbert, are first-time Super Bowl players.
The NFL selects its Super Bowl officials based on a scoring system that evaluates their performance on a weekly basis. So Torbert and his usual crew are considered some of the most accurate officials in the NFL this season, and that’s part of the reason why he’s getting the nod to be the skin official. Who is the Super Bowl 56 referee?
Ronald Torbert will be the referee for Super Bowl 56. Torbert has been an NFL official since 2010, when he began his career as an extra referee. He was promoted to referee in 2014 after the retirement of Scott Green and Ron Winter.
In 2021, Torbert is averaging 11.8 flags and 10 penalties accepted per game, per NFLPenalties.com. Both points are good for the second-placed NFL umpire behind only Bill Vinovich.
Torbert was never a Super Bowl referee, but he was a substitute for Super Bowl 53, which saw the Patriots beat the Rams 13-3. He works as an attorney when he doesn’t have to, and he’s a graduate of Michigan State University and Harvard Law School.
Torbert will be the third black official to referee the Super Bowl. Mike Carey was the first to do so in 2008 while Jerome Boger received the nod in 2013.
