Super Bowl Tournament Show Wins a Live Emmy for the First Time – The Hollywood Reporter
It’s “Dre Day” once again as the 2022 Super Bowl showdown focusing on Dr. Dre dominated the first night of the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday night.
This year’s Emmy for best live variety show went to NBC’s mid-season broadcast that aired during the NFL championship game on February 13. The special has an official name. Pepsi Super Bowl LVI halftime show starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.
Notably, this is the first time a Super Bowl halftime show has dominated in this category, even though previous midseason shows have won in other craft categories. The winners for the show are executive producers Shawn Carter, Desiree Perez and Jesse Collins; co-executive producers Dionne Harmon and Dave Meyers; supervising producer Aaron B. Cooke; and performing artists Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.
It also marks the first time hip-hop has been awarded an award in this category, with the show’s remix featuring radio hits such as “California Love,” “No More Drama,” “Lose Yourself,” and “Lose Yourself.” Still DRE” in the 2010s, the category was dominated by both the TV Tony Awards, which have won six times in the decade, and the live musical, which scored three wins in that span. ABC’s Live in front of the studio audience series, was nominated this year to make an episode of Truth of life and one of different blowsdominating 2019 and 2020. Last year’s winner was the 2020 special election by Stephen Colbert.
This year was also nominated as a TV series for the Grammys, Oscars and Tonys. The Oscars ceremony has never won in this category, and the 2022 iteration was marred by Will Smith infamously slapping Chris Rock onstage after the comedian joked about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
