Magic Weekend will return to Newcastle in 2023, hosting the full round of the Betfred Super League on the first weekend of June.

St James’ Park will host the event for a record seventh time on June 3 and 4, with all six matches live. Sports sky also.

The announcement was made one day later England kicked off the Rugby League World Cup with a 60-6 win over Samoa in front of 43,119 spectators at Newcastle United’s home ground.

Super League commercial director Rhodri Jones said: “We are delighted to announce the return of Magic Weekend to Newcastle.

“It’s a fan favorite and the day the players look forward to in the calendar.”

“I would also like to thank Sky Sports, Newcastle United and Newcastle City Council for their continued support of this event.”

Next year’s Magic Weekend will be played with a repeat of the 2019 game at Anfield between Hull Kingston Rovers and the Salford Reds (1pm). The match at Anfield ended with a scoreline as Robins won two points.

The Wigan Warriors will then meet the Catalans Dragons (3.45pm) in the mid-match on the opening day of the two sides’ first meeting at the Magic. Saturday will end with a West Yorkshire derby between the Leeds Rhinos and the Castleford Tigers (6pm).

Newly promoted Leigh Centurions returns to the Magic Weekend lineup for a third appearance and will open things up on Sunday when they join Wakefield Trinity (12:30pm).

Defending Super League champions St Helens played Huddersfield Giants (2:45) for the second time at the Magic. They have met once before in 2016 when the Giants played overwhelmingly to win 48-20.

The final game of the weekend saw newly appointed Hull FC head coach Tony Smith face one of his former clubs at Warrington Wolves (5pm).
