Super Mario movie guarantees the most successful opening weekend of any animated film ever
Update [Sun 9th Apr, 2023 17:05 BST]: The movie Super Mario Bros. replaced Frozen II to win the biggest opening weekend of all time for an animated film.
Original story [Sat 8th Apr, 2023 17:30 BST]: We’re still in the early days of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and so far it seems to be smashing the box office. In an update, the film is now predicted to hit $368 million globally before the end of the weekend.
Deadline has provided some more news of its continued success around the world – breaking milestones across multiple countries in the “Friday update”. Here’s a quick recap:
- Mexico: More ticket sales ($11.4 million) than any full opening weekend of any April cartoon in the country.
- UK and Ireland: Thursday’s biggest box office take for any animated title ever and second largest for a Universal title. $8.6 million in two days.
- China: $5.3 million on Thursday
- Germany: Better than any animated or family movie for its full April opening weekend, and outperforming four-weekends like Frozen and Incredibles 2.
- Spain: An additional $1.8 million on Thursday, for a total of $4 million by Friday. Beats all three weekend premieres like Toy Story 4 and Finding Dory.
The film also continued to do well (on Thursday) in many other markets including France ($2.7 million), Central America ($2.7 million), Italy ($2.6 million), Australia 2 .3 million USD) and Brazil (1.8 million USD).
