Surfer killed in shark attack on California beach, officials say

A male surfer was killed in a shark attack in Morro Bay, California, on Christmas Eve, the Morro Bay Port Department confirmed to CNN.

“The Police and Fire Department responded to a report of an unresponsive male victim on a beach after he was pulled out of the water by a shark attack,” the Port Department said in a statement. dad.

According to Port Superintendent Eric Endersby, officials located the surfer at 10:48 a.m. PT off the beach of Morro Bay State Park. Morro Bay is 15 miles (24 km) west of San Luis Obispo.

The victims died at the scene.

The San Luis Obispo County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim and is working to notify relatives before releasing the victim’s name, Endersby said.

While beaches in Morro Bay and the State Park area remain open for now, authorities have asked beachgoers to stay out of the water for the next 24 hours.

“It was a horrible accident,” Endersby said. “Fortunately, the weather and wind ruined the surf, so there weren’t many surfers, but we closed the waters for safety.”

State park representatives are at the scene investigating the crash.
