Susan Sarandon tells the story behind her famous ‘Simpsons’ coat

Probably because it is so. As Vogue pointed out a couple of years back, Sarandon seems to have rocked this look since 1995, everywhere from hockey games to studio visits, in the past. Balenciaga takes Springfield. But where did the jacket come from? And why does she like wearing it so much? We called her up to find out.

Sarandon first came to get the coat after voicing Bart’s ballet teacher in an episode of season 6. She also briefly lent her voice to the computer in season 17.” It was given to me to thank me for the voiceover The Simpsons, so it has my name on it and everything,” Sarandon said. Her favorite character, Marge, is featured prominently below her name.

Classic Simpsons jackets from the cast and crew will sometimes be tailored on resale sites. And some other guest stars, like Woody Harrelson, have also been spotted wearing theirs, although no one wears them as often as Sarandon. “In the years that followed, as new characters were added to the show, I got new patches that they would send me to be placed in certain places, so it was like an ongoing thing. out,” she added.

But it’s been a minute since a new character patch came out. “I don’t know if they stopped adding or they didn’t create a new patch, or not have any new characters that would create a gap to warrant a new patch,” she continued, laughing. “Perhaps it’s just out of reach, their patch budget.”

I wonder if Sarandon has any philosophies about her personal style — usually a mix of the fit and the casual, the masculine and the feminine, with a little wink—And how the coat could fit it. “Honestly, I don’t have a style philosophy,” she says. “I’m just kind of me and over the years have created some sort of style. I don’t think I’m very fashionable.”

As for why it so often takes up place in her wardrobe, she attributes the warmth — and the big bags. “I stopped wearing any kind of purse or backpack and I just stuffed everything in my pocket,” she said.

There is also an element of good emotional transmission when playing. “People responded in a very open and simple way about that jacket, so it was fun,” she said. “It puts a smile on people’s faces when you walk around and I love that — it’s a business jacket.”
