Suspect in Paris shooting transferred to psychiatric unit | News

Authorities said the 69-year-old suspect, who is believed to have killed three people, was expelled from custody for health reasons.

A French man is suspected of killing three people in a case attack at a Kurdish cultural center in Paris was transferred to a psychiatric unit, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Saturday that the 69-year-old suspect was taken into custody for health reasons the same day and taken to a police psychiatric facility.

Shootings at the cultural center and a nearby hair salon on Friday caused panic in the city’s bustling 10th district, home to shops, restaurants and a large Kurdish population.

Three other people were injured in the attack, which the suspect told investigators he was “racist”, a source close to the case told AFP news agency.

The Paris prosecutor said a doctor examined the suspect’s health on Saturday afternoon and deemed it “inappropriate for the measure of detention”.

The man was detained and taken to a police psychiatric unit pending his presentation before the investigating magistrate as the investigation continues, the prosecutor added.

Earlier on Saturday, the Paris prosecutor extended the suspect’s detention by 24 hours and made an additional charge of acting with “racist motives”.

He has been detained on suspicion of murder, attempted murder, armed violence and violations of firearms laws.

Protests in Paris

The suspect, who has a history of racist violence, initially targeted the Kurdish cultural center before entering a hair salon, where he was arrested.

Of the three injured, one is being treated at the hospital and two are being treated for serious injuries.

According to the Democratic Council of the Kurds in France (CDK-F), the dead included one woman and two men, AFP reported.

The woman killed, Emine Kara, was the leader of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in France, organization spokeswoman Agit Polat said. Her application for political asylum in France was denied.

The other victims were Abdulrahman Kizil and Mir Perwer, according to CDK-F.

Thousands the Kurds gather at the Place de la Republique in central Paris on Saturday afternoon, where they held a minute of silence for the three killed and those who “died for freedom”.

Police fired tear gas after clashes broke out and protesters hurled bullets at officers. AFP reported that at least four cars overturned and one caught fire.

The capital’s police chief Laurent Nunez told BFM television that 31 officers and one protester were injured in the disturbances, while 11 were arrested, “mainly as a result of damage”.

More than 1,000 people staged a similar protest in the southern port city of Marseille, which ended in clashes with officers and at least two police cars set on fire.
