SUV sizes compared: Small / Medium / Large / XL, which is the best?

When we buy Tesla Model 3I believe it would have been more than enough when our first baby rolled over a year ago.

Well, I was wrong. I’ve become what I used to hate: an SUV buyer.

You see, problems with a sedan and a small child loading them in and out of the car are almost impossible as they get older. Well, unless you come out of a squat with a heavy, crying, moving object in your arms.

SUVs generally sit higher and provide more ground clearance to load a child in. Plus, you get extra height in the trunk for loading stacked items.

Once you have this figured out, the next step is figuring out which SUV to buy. What we want to do is assemble a group of vehicles that range in size from a small SUV to a large SUV.

SUVs are classified in Australia by their footprint (we’ll explain more below).

Anything smaller than a small SUV probably isn’t big enough for a toddler and their huge baby seat, and we chose to stop at the full-size SUV segment because the overtaking Beyond that is coming up with terrain products – which could be another story for another day.

How do you figure out which SUV is right for you? We’ve put together three tests designed to help you figure out how big you need to pass.

SUV categories explained

Australian cars are grouped into size categories to make it easier to report sales. The size is determined by multiplying the width by the length to obtain a footprint in millimeters.

The size classifications of small, medium, large, and full-size SUVs are:

  • Small: <8100mm
  • Medium: 8108 – 8800mm
  • Large: 8801 – 9800mm
  • Upper large: > 9801mm

Our test

Our three tests are pretty simple and should give you an idea of what size you need to go for your next SUV.

We’ve tried to compare Audi SUVs to make comparisons easier, but since the size segment is the same regardless of brand, which SUV size is right for you in these tests will be applies to other products and models in the same category.

Due to vehicle availability, two of the vehicles here are Sportback (or coupe) versions of their respective large SUVs. Since there is only a very small difference in cargo capacity, it should not change the results too much.

Test 1: Adult test

While you may not be carrying adults all the time, it’s worth finding out how they fit into the second row of these SUVs. It will give you a picture of what you can expect if you need to carry people often.

Exam 2: Bicycle test

For cyclists, it’s one thing to know if it fits easily into your bike. Knowing if you can also fit in a second-row passenger is another.

This test is just meant to see how the bike can fit and if you can load an extra passenger into the second row.

Quiz 3: Christmas Day Quiz

We were all there. You need to load a load of luggage into the car, and somehow get the whole family in.

This quiz is all about trying to pack the last things I need to bring on Christmas Day.

Additionally, we also wanted to see how much room in the second row with rear-facing child seats and how much room you compromise in the front passenger seat to accommodate that child seat.

Consists of

So we’ve clearly shown that full-size SUVs are… big. Nothing new there.

But with everyone’s needs being different, these tests will tell you how much room you have to play in a small, medium, large and larger SUV. For us with just one kid, a midsize SUV pretty much fits the bill. For those of you with more children, a larger SUV may be the only answer.

I want to know, do you own a wagon? If so, how spacious is it compared to an SUV and how do you load kids in with the lower ride height?
