Swedish dish towel review: Eco-friendly paper towels

I just have to go ahead and admit it: I am a tissue junkie. While I’ve been trying to get rid of some of my previous unfriendly habits – Stasher’s reusable silicone bag, for example, was my biggest discovery of 2019 – I’m embarrassed to tear a well-fitting tissue from a roll dozens of times a day. Whether I’m sweeping up debris on my kitchen counter or wiping up a red sauce explosion in the microwave, I always turn to paper towels 100% of the time.

Recently, however, I decided this needed to change. Not only is this consumption bad for the planet, it’s also bad for my monthly budget. My favorite 16 packs of healthy tissuesfor example, has a whopping $30.99 (it’s on sale for $26.46 now). In my quest to find a more sustainable solution, I discovered Swedish dish towels.

Grab this bulk pack of 10 and change your tissues forever.

This pack of 10 is on sale now, down from its original price of $24.99.

Boasts nearly 23,000 positive reviews and a Rated 4.6 stars on Amazonthe Pack of 10 is on sale for $19.95, originally $24.99, and is trending now for the reasons mentioned above: a) paper towels are wasteful and harmful to the environment and b) paper towels are expensive! Are you ready for an interesting reality? One Swedish dish towel can actually replace 17 rolls of paper towels. Let it sink in, guys.

Here’s the basic story: Invented by a Swedish engineer in 1949, dish towels are reusable, biodegradable, and incredibly affordable, not to mention highly effective. Therefore, they are widely used throughout Scandinavian countries such as Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and Iceland, which are also among the most environmentally friendly countries in the world. Bottom line: You’ll be hard-pressed to find a roll of paper towels in any Nordic home or business, as they rely on Swedish dish towels instead.

Sustainability aside, fabrics with loads of additional selling points are gaining a lot of fans here in the US. Composed of renewable and natural fibers, specifically 70% cellulose and 30% cotton, dish towels dry in the air much faster than the stinky sponges we Americans grew up using. As a result, germs and bacteria (and their accompanying odors) don’t have time to grow on them – and if they start to smell bad, just toss them in the dishwasher or washing machine and they’re good to go. will be as good as new after one cycle. Yes really. You can reuse each piece of fabric hundreds of times before you throw it away, and fear not – they won’t end up in the landfill later, as they’re also biodegradable.

While I assumed I would be using towel sets primarily in my kitchen, they turned out to be more versatile than I expected. For example, you can use the cloth to wash your car. Or remove nail polish (just add bleach, and voilà!). Or dry your pet’s nails. Or wipe down your mirrors and windows (lint-free and streak-free!). I have one assigned to wipe the messy faces and greasy hands of my four kids. I keep another one in their bathroom for nightly toothpaste/sink cleaning. Given that fabrics are safe on surfaces like wood, marble, tile, stainless steel and yes, even on human skin, suddenly they’re replacing not only paper towels but napkins, sponges, and wipes your frequently wet dishes.

There is also the fact that dish towels are very absorbent. Brands really have the video is very watchable of a cloth soaked in an entire cup of liquid (fast forward to 0:35 to catch it). This benefit didn’t mean much to me – until I remember countless times I’ve used dozens of paper towels to wipe up a spilled milkshake. So. A lot of. Waste.

One just has to turn to Amazon reviewers for even more reasons to try the Swedish dish towels. “Much better than all cotton dish towels as they are VERY absorbent but easily wrung out completely (and I mean completely!) after use,” writes an Amazon reviewer. Others say: “I rarely write reviews, but these are welcome. SO much more substantial than Handi Wipes and you can actually scrub with them, but they never feel as bad as a sponge. I’ve been using the same two for a month now and they still look great. ”

The dish towel available in three color options – white will fit perfectly into today’s all-white kitchens, while the yellow and multicolor pack (currently not shipping until August) will add extra flair. Great for coloring peaceful spaces – and with their hard-to-dry properties and 3D diamond textured texture, they can also be used to scrub away stubborn residue from pots, pans and more.

After using dish towels for several weeks now, I can attest that my paper towel consumption is decreasing. But more importantly, my peace of mind is growing. I love knowing that by reusing them day in and day out, I’m significantly cutting down on my family’s annual waste. We will never be a zero-waste family, but Swedish dish towels is proof that a little change can go a long way.
