Tacoma Police Department tell the victim was taken to a local hospital in serious condition.
“People have fled, sheltering in place, and stores have been locked down,” said a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department, Sgt. Darren Moss told CNN.
He said the mall was closed while police were searching for the suspect. “The scene is still active, and we don’t want people reacting there,” Moss said.
Law enforcement officers across Pierce County are helping Tacoma police search the mall, county sheriff’s department said in a tweet.
The mall is home to more than 150 stores, according to its website.
