It’s been a special year for spots well-dressed movie director. We’ve seen people like Luca Guadagnino, Taika Waititiand the show Noah Baumbach matched the top at its premieres globally. Even Newly refurbished J.Crew exploit beloved filmmaker Mike Mills model its latest collaboration. And now we can add three-time Oscar-nominated director Todd Field to the growing list.
School is ending flash press for Tárin which Cate Blanchett starred an elaborate conductor (and menswear). The tour has asked for every nook and cranny of his wardrobe, suits and casual wear alike. His suitable appearance relatively simple, often worn without a tie and with a confusingly wide hat. But his personal style really shines when he dresses loosely, cleverly combining unfussy pins with some sharper front slant pieces. This is the same dress we’ve seen in the broader culture, a quietly vibrant movement led by designer Brendon Babenzien at the new Noah and J. Crew: a casual way of dressing- Classic, derived from time-tested menswear but styled to not feel too claustrophobic.
So: specific. Field pairing a moderately structured blazer with a navy blue button-down and some khaki pants for a promotional photo shoot at the Venice Film Festival. He completed the outfit with a baseball cap and Birkenstock suede clogs, looking like a trendy Cooper Union professor teaching a proper course in typography. At the New York Film Festival, Field leaned toward a Classic East Coast fall fit: a blazer, a thin sweater over an oxford and blue jeans worn with great oxblood boots. When one thinks of Hollywood’s best clothes, the mind often rushes to A-list actors and couture suits. But as Field and others have demonstrated, movie directors can dress best of them all. Field, in particular, has struck a chord with a certain angle of today’s old-meets-new menswear. Dressing this way won’t make you the flashiest person at a Hollywood event, but as Todd Field proved, you’ll still look great.
