Teenager jumps to rescue 15-year-old drowned in Barnstable

CENTERVILLE – An afternoon of fun and fishing for young friends from New York Wednesday quickly turned tense when they witnessed a stranger jump off a bridge into the Centerville River near Craigville Beach.

Will Anagnos said: ‘He bobbed up and down in the water and then under, and I couldn’t see him. “I really didn’t know what to do. I just pulled him out of the water and then I brought him back to shore.”

Firefighters credit Will and his friends for saving the 15-year-old boy’s life. Will’s mother credits his years of learning to swim, water safety, and his experience as an Eagle Scout.

“He was trained in swimming and what to do in an emergency,” said Will’s mother, Gidget Anagnos. “You really don’t think about it, you just go.”

The victim was unconscious when the boys pulled him out. Emergency responders arrived shortly after.

Kyle Richardson said: “I feel good, we saved someone’s life. “But it’s scary at the moment. It’s really stressful.”

“My kids are very humble and they do the right thing when it is necessary,” Gidget said. “He pulled it out today. I’m overwhelmed.”

A fire official said the 15-year-old boy was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries.
