Teenager saves driver who accidentally drove car into Patchogue Bay

A teenager is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a motorist in Patchogue.

Officers told News 12 that 18-year-old Mia Samolinski was driving near Patchogue Bay when she accidentally pressed the gas instead of the brake and plunged into the water at Shorefront Park on Tuesday.

Police say 17-year-old Anthony Zhongor saw it and dived into the water to help.

“I just saw the girl knock on the door and didn’t hesitate anymore,” Zhongor said. “Just jump in, save her, get us out, go home.”

Zhongor, a senior in high school, pulled Samolinski from the car and helped her get to the pier safely.

Once out of the water, Samolinski was taken care of by emergency responders. Her father said she only suffered a cut on her leg.

Samolinski’s father took the opportunity to thank Zhongor Wednesday for saving his daughter’s life.

Charles Samolinski said: “While other people were looking at their phones and filming, he jumped in. “So I’m here to say that he deserves recognition.”

Zhongor was on his way to training camp after joining the Marines.

Charles Samolinski says he has been a hero and has no words to thank for rescuing his daughter.

Zhongor said he doesn’t like being called a hero but was happy to be in his place on Tuesday.
