Tender for Olympics 2030: Sapporo expected to announce cost-cutting

TOKYO –

The northern Japanese city of Sapporo is set to announce what it says is reducing costs to make the city an attractive venue for the 2030 Winter Olympics.

City officials are expected to release details on Monday.

The announcement comes nearly four months after the delayed Tokyo Olympics closed at a cost officials estimated at $15.4 billion. Some estimates suggest the cost could be as much as twice that, and all but about $6 billion in wages.

Organizers have yet to release final budget figures for the Tokyo Olympics.

Sapporo, which hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics, is considered a leading contender. It helped bolster its case by stepping in and serving as the venue for the walking and marathon races for the Tokyo Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee moved these events briefly to Sapporo in 2019, due to concerns about Tokyo’s hot summer weather.

Other areas that have expressed interest include Spanish bids from the regions of Aragon and Catalonia, possible tenders from Ukraine, 2010 host city Vancouver, and some interest for 2030 or 2034 from Salt Lake City, which hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported earlier this month that Sapporo is likely to announce costs between 280 billion and 300 billion yen. This is 2.55 billion to 2.65 billion US dollars at current exchange rates.

This is a 20% reduction from its 2019 estimate, Kyodo said, citing unnamed sources, Kyodo said. Despite the promises, the Olympic Games consistently ran over budget.

Kyodo said several events will be held in Obihiro, located east of Sapporo, and in Nagano, the host city of the 1998 Winter Olympics.

The IOC no longer goes through a lengthy bidding process. The host cities are now chosen by the IOC leadership, and the decisions are made by IOC members with ranks and records.

IOC members’ votes for the 2016 Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Olympics have been tainted by allegations of bribery. A few days ago, former IOC member Carlos Nuzman of Brazil was sentenced to 30 years in prison for bribing IOC members during the 2009 vote for 2016.

He is appealing the conviction.

Tsunekazu Takeda stepped down in 2019 as an IOC member and head of the Japan Olympic Committee when he was embroiled in allegations of bribery in his bid for the 2020 Olympics. He denies any misconduct.

The IOC has selected the Olympic venues until 2032, for the 2030 Winter Olympics. These are: 2022 Beijing; 2024 Paris; 2026 Milan-Cortina; In 2028, the city of Los Angeles; 2032 Brisbane, Australia.

In a statement to the Associated Press, the IOC said “there is no fixed time frame for hosting elections for 2030 or any other version of the Olympic Games. future, the watchdog and watchdog with an interest in future Olympics, guided by strategic opportunities for the Olympic Movement and the global landscape.”
