Tesla’s Fully Self-Driving Regulations Under Review in California

California is reassessing Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) testing program to determine if the electric car manufacturer’s software should comply with the DMV . autonomous vehicle regulations, the LA time reported on Tuesday.

FSD is an advanced driver assistance system that helps handle some driving tasks, but Tesla says it doesn’t make the vehicles fully autonomous. Its features “require a fully attentive driver,” according to the company.

If Tesla’s cars were deemed self-driving by California, state law would require the automaker to disclose all crashes on public roads, even when driven manually. Those reports are made public, as is the data on the self-driving systems removed.

California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) informed Tesla of the regulator’s review last week, LA time speak.

“Recent software updates, videos showing dangerous use of that technology, open investigations by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the opinions of other experts in the field prompted a reassessment,” the DMV said, according to the report.

The DMV and Tesla did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

In October of last year, Tesla vehicles with the then latest 10.3 FSD software repeatedly issued forward collision warnings when there was no immediate danger, according to video posted by beta users. However, Tesla fixed the software within a day.
