If you’re like us, lighting candles at home can also lift your mood as it improves the aroma. After all, self-care comes in many different forms. Did you know that not all candles are created equal? Many major candle brands have switched to using clean, all-natural ingredients in their products, but not all provide ingredient lists. That makes it almost impossible to figure out which is healthier for our homes and bodies. It also negates the whole relax vibe that candles produce if you are breathing in smoke that is not good for you. In fact, it’s completely counter-intuitive!

In our research for this story, we came across a number of different factors that can help determine if a candle has lower toxicity. All in all, it’s good to know about the different waxes, conditioners, and fragrances you’re using. Healthier waxes, like soy, beeswax and coconut oil burn cleaner than paraffin, which is essentially petroleum waste! You’ll also want to look for natural scents that are derived from essential oils and botanical ingredients because synthetic fragrances often contain phthalates. Then make sure your candle has a paper or 100% cotton wick.
