The 2023 BMW 8 Series is refined in design and better in technology

BMW car is making some small but significant changes to Line 8 for the 2023 model year. The coupe, convertible and sedan models receive subtle visual refinements and better in-car technology while remaining at the top of the range. M8 currently offered exclusively in the Competitive version.

At first glance, it takes a trained eye to identify the upgraded 8 Series. Most of the changes are found at the front, where designers have added a new kidney grille and reshaped the intakes in the bumper. The 2023 model is much easier to spot at night: the kidney grilles are now illuminated. They light up when unlocking the car or opening the door, although the driver can also turn them on manually.

8 unmodified M models get aerodynamic door mirrors from M8 and BMW expanded color color palette with five shades called San Remo Green Metallic, Skyscraper Gray Metallic, Portimao Blue Metallic, Tanzanite Blue Metallic and Frozen Pure Gray Metallic. The last two colors come from BMW’s Personal division. New 20-inch wheel designs are also available for 2023. And, like all M-branded vehicles, the M850i and M8 will receive classic BMW Motorsport logo celebrate the division’s 50th anniversary.

Inside, the biggest change is right in the center of the dashboard. The screen of the iDrive infotainment system increases from 10.25 to 12.3 inches.

These updates also apply to Alpina B8. As for the M8, it’s dead: the base model is gone in 2023, leaving only the M8 Competition (shown above) powered by a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 with 617 hp. and 553 pound-feet of torque. The engine spins four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and it takes the M8 from 0 to 60 mph in three flat seconds. Electrically adjustable and heated M Carbon bucket seats and two-tone black and Sakhir Orange leather and Alcantara upholstery join the list of options.

BMW will begin production of the 2023 8 Series in March 2022. Surprisingly, the updated model isn’t a penny more expensive than the upcoming car. Plan to spend $85,995 for the rear-wheel drive 840i coupe and Gran Coupe and $95,395 for the rear-wheel drive 840i convertible (these numbers include the mandatory $995 destination fee). Alpina’s 8 Series-based B8 dominates the range with a base price of $140,895.

The list of standard features is extensive, and buyers have many options and option packages to choose from. New for 2023 is the M Sport Professional Package, which includes the M Sport brake with black calipers, rear spoiler and elongated Shadow Line exterior trim.

BMW has one last 8 Series-related surprise in store for the 2023 model year. It has teamed up with artist Jeff Koons to create a limited edition of the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe featuring a side finish. Outer laminated with 11 colors. The launch is scheduled for February 17.
