You may notice that you tend to sleep much better when staying at a five-star hotel. That’s because—in part—a line of well-appointed hotel beds, which often include pillow down for a luxurious sleeping experience. In honor of March as National Sleep Month, we decided to lower the price of pillows and ask some sleep experts for tips on choosing the best pillow.
“pillow Parima Ijaz, founder of the brand, explains: “There is a tendency to choose pillows that are softer, much finer, and the fluff on the inside of the pillow allows for easy flexibility and provides a high level of comfort for a good night’s sleep. comfortable”. Pure Parima. But that’s not the only reason feather pillows dominate this category. “Cotton pillows are much better at repelling bacteria build-up, so you’re less likely to be exposed to germs every time you go to bed.”
Choose the right pillow:
There are different types of pillow downand not all are created equal. “Choosing a pillow is a very personal thing because people have different body types and sleeping positions,” says casper Sleep Advisor Dr. Michael Grandner. “The wrong pillow can make all the difference [in your sleep quality]. Our study found that people who rated their pillow uncomfortable also reported poorer overall sleep quality, symptoms of insomnia and daytime sleepiness.”
Ijaz believes that the best feather among the various feathers is the white goose feather. “It’s the softest and warmest mattress,” she says, adding that the degree of filling, or filling force, is different for each mattress. “The higher the fill capacity, the harder the pillow will become over time because it can hold that firmness better than pillows with a low fill capacity.” But she admits that strength and warmth are ultimately personal preference when it comes to choosing a cotton pillowcase.
Stephen Light, CEO and Co-Owner at Nolah Technology, note that the goose down pillow and the duck feather pillow are similar in feel, temperature, and durability. “However, because geese are larger, their fluff clusters are also larger, so they tend to be softer and have a higher filling force than their downy geese.” (He says duck feathers also tend to have a more pungent odor than goose feathers.)
Light provides a cheat sheet to determine the best type pillow down for your needs.
Fill capacity measures the amount of space an ounce or less fills. In other words, it measures the thickness or porosity of the filling. “The higher the filling, the higher the pillow. For pillows, 600 or higher is generally considered high quality,” says Light.
The amount falls down. “The higher the fill weight, the thicker and stronger the pillow.”
As a general rule, if you’re a side sleeper, Light says you’ll need the tallest and firmest pillows to support your neck.
On the other hand, he says that people who lie on their stomachs tend to prefer flatter, softer options. “And the ones sleeping in the back are somewhere in between.” Ijaz agrees, adding, “If you’re a back sleeper, you’ll probably prefer a moderately hard chair. pillow that helps your spine and head align more comfortably through a slightly better fit.” And if you’re a stomach sleeper, she says that a softer, softer pillow is best: “It will allow you to rest your head on the pillow at will without straining your neck and back.”
Here’s another thing to keep in mind: If you get a pillow down, the feathers will move around a lot and Ijaz says that’s a good thing as this allows you to position the pillow to the exact shape and firmness you desire. “If you find that the spread of hair bothers you, we recommend using pillow protectionthis will help keep the feathers more clumped, while still allowing you to experience the softness that fluff provides.”
In addition, Grandner points out that pillows change over time. “It’s not uncommon for you to need to change your pillows after a year or two, or even more often depending on how you use them.” So if you start to wake up with excessive pressure on your head, neck or back, the pillow may have reached the end of its life.
