I love the look of a luxurious diffuser, but my knowledge of essential oils is still embarrassingly lacking. What aroma ingredient combination is most effective for creating a soothing atmosphere? What about essential oils for focus? What is the best way to reap their sensory benefits? And how exactly do they affect our moods?
Given the frenzied questioning nature of that first paragraph, focus seemed like the perfect place for me to begin my journey to learn more about the world of essential oils. For guidance, I reached out to Rachelle Robinett, a clinical herbalist and founder of the herbal remedy brand Pharmakon Supernatural.
Going forward, Robinett will guide us through all of our essential oils to core questions, from how they work to mind-boosting magic to the best way to breathe them.

What is essential oil?
Before we get into how they impact our mind, let’s break down what exactly essential oils are. to be.

We know that essential oils work best when inhaled, but because they are so concentrated, you should have an inhalation strategy. “Sometimes just opening the bottle is enough!” says Robinett, who has used this method with Rosemary and Hinoki — two oils that are always on her desk.
In general, though, Robinett recommends diffusing essential oils or mixing them with a carrier oil (like jojoba, coconut, or avocado) before applying to your body.
What are the best essential oils for concentration?
