The Complete Broadcast Guide – The Hollywood Reporter
Broadcasting Pilot Season continues to grow.
After the pandemic wiped out Pilot Season 2020, ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW featured a mix of drama and comedy from before COVID-19 and scripts developed during the quarantine. Emerging shows from Pilot Season 2020+ are now on the air – watch CBS’ Ghosts and ABC’s Magic years – and on deck for mid-season.
At the same time, five broadcast networks have significantly reduced the number of scripts they are buying. Gone are the days when the Big Four bought 300 comedy and drama scripts each. As the line between hits and misses has disappeared, networks are becoming more and more patient with their scripted investments and looking at data like lagged viewing and streaming performance. postponed for 30 days.
The pandemic has also forced broadcast networks to develop ways in which they approach the pilot season. Casting nearly 100 dramas and comedies, competing with cable networks and streamers for top talent, locations and directors is a thing of the past. Instead, five broadcast networks have moved – like cable and streaming – to a year-round growth model. So while the traditional TV schedule remains, the networks have now taken a big leap towards pilot orders and, in some cases, May’s mass orders. We normally publish this guide every year in January, but considering early orders, we’ll post it soon as additional pilot pickups are expected to arrive before the end of the year.
With all of the above in mind, here’s a look at the pilots vying for the 2022-23 broadcast season as ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and The CW sift through scripts and move forward in an effort to find the best. the next breakout hit.
