The costumes from Scratch are as romantic as the story itself

For co-writers and sisters Tembi and Attica Locke, the Netflix series From Scratch is a profound individual. Based on Tembi’s best-selling memoir, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily and Finding Home, an eight-part romantic drama that tells a cross-cultural love story set in the idyllic Sicilian countryside. Offering a glimpse into Tembi’s whirling life, the show stars Zoe Saldaña as Amy Wheeler, a law student who travels to Italy for a six-week art show and encounters and falls in love with Sicilian chef Lino Ortolano (Eugenio Mastrandrea). The two embark on a far-reaching journey filled with love, great food, and unpredictable challenges to bring their families together in ways they may never have imagined. Be prepared — it’s a tear.

The fact that Tembi and Attica were so heavily involved in the project made it all the more special for costume designer Amanda Riley. Tasked with creating an artfully staged story to support Amy and Lino’s incredible love story, Riley worked closely with the sisters every step of the way. In addition to sharing family photos, helping to establish the look of each character, Tembi and Attica are always available to share feedback and address any questions Riley and her team have. “Throughout the journey, there are moments when Tembi shares personal stories that help colorize moments and characters, allowing for more insight into how this story was drawn,” said Riley.

For Tembi, it was important that Amy’s appearance reflected her surroundings and her adventurous spirit. “There’s always a little surprise for Amy,” Tembi said. “I wanted the clothes to grow and change with her time.” There’s also a lot of discussion surrounding Amy’s Texas roots, which serves as a basis for her fashion choices throughout the series. “An intrinsic part for me in developing each outfit was hand-picking pieces that fit the individual and the individual to recreate the feeling that, even back in Los Angeles, Amy is walking Walk through the streets of Florence to create wearable works of art,” adds Riley.

Color, especially red, and print is a fundamental part of Amy’s style, and when it came time to source pieces for the series, Riley worked with vintage purveyors. local to find one-of-a-kind works. “I had a great advantage working in Italy,” says Riley: “My incredible local team is connected to second-hand wholesalers all over Tuscany and the south. “I have also selected contemporary Italian and French design stores whose design inspiration is drawn from classic vintage prints, fabrics and cuts. I love the look of feminine flowers and ruched fabrics with classic lines that continue to be worn season after season.” For Riley, it was important that each piece felt alive and had a story.

This was especially true when designing Amy’s wedding dress, a replica of Tembi’s Amsale dress. “I happened to be in Amsale,” Tembi recalls the bride-to-be’s shopping experience. “It was a chance meeting that instantly turned magical.” The late designer is recognized as the inventor of the modern wedding dress. Looking for a classic and high-end design, Tembi was shown the dress by a salesperson at a Beverly Hills store. It’s a floor pattern and happens to be the last of its kind. “I tried it, and it fits perfectly! Not a single change,” she shared. “When I later learned that Amsale was a black woman of Ethiopian origin, I felt all the stars align.”

This gorgeous sleeveless satin gown features classic lines through a high neckline, drop waist, and voluminous skirt. But it’s all just drama in the background. Anchored behind loomed two flowers down into a sweeping train. For Tembi, the flowers that meet in the middle symbolize the union of two hearts.

With Tembi’s help, Riley and her team approached Amsale, now run by the designer’s daughter, to recreate the look. The designers consulted previous catalogs and restored samples, working closely with Riley and her team to get accurate measurements. “The process is truly divinely guided,” says Riley. “The dress arrived after being made to Zoe’s exact measurements, and when she first wore it, it fit her perfectly. I can’t say there was a dry eye on set the day Zoe showed up in a dress to shoot the wedding scene. It was a truly magical moment.”

Riley also chose to use Amsale for her sister Amy’s bridesmaid dress and for both of the bride’s mother’s dresses.

Seeing her last dress again years later while reliving one of the happiest days of her life was a visceral emotion for Tembi. “It brings me joy, tears, longing and a lot of gratitude,” she said.

With Riley and the Locke sisters at the helm, From Scratch The wardrobe is as personal and breathtaking as the story itself — full of magical moments that spark happiness and love.

From Scratch currently streaming on Netflix.
