The first Coral Safe Sunscreen with Methylene Blue on the market


The research paper “Ultraviolet Radiation Protection Potential of Methylene Blue for Human Skin and Coral Reef Health” was published in Nature’s Scientific Reports.

80% of sunscreens today use Oxybenzone as a chemical UV blocker, although many studies have shown that it helps accelerate the destruction of coral reefs. Several states and countries have now banned the use of Oxybenzone and its derivatives to prevent devastating effects on the world’s marine ecosystems.

In addition, consumers focus primarily on the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to prevent sunburn and potentially dangerous long-term health problems. However, SPF only measures exposure to UVB rays, leaving sunscreen users vulnerable to UVA-induced oxidative stress and skin aging.

“Our peer-reviewed study demonstrates that Methylene Blue is an effective UV blocker with a number of highly desirable characteristics as a new ingredient in sunscreens. It shows potential Absorbs broad spectrum of both UVA and UVB rays, promotes DNA damage repair, fights reactive oxygen species (ROS) caused by UVA rays and most importantly does not damage coral reefs .” Study lead author, Dr. Kan Cao, Founder of Mblue Labs, Bluelene Skincare and Professor in the Department of Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics of the University of Maryland.

Mblue Labs and the University of Maryland have a patent pending on Methylene Blue’s properties as an effective UV blocker, while slowing skin aging and promoting DNA damage repair.

The company’s first anti-aging sunscreen, called “Bluevado SunFix,” contains the safe active ingredients, FDA-approved Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide, along with an optimized dose of Methylene Blue.
