The huge sunspot creates a fear of the sun’s rays for the Earth; NASA says the risk of power outages is high

NASA says a dangerous sunspot has doubled in size in the past 24 hours. And now it threatens Earth with its ability to emit solar flares that could cause radio blackouts across the planet.

Just yesterday, it was reported that up to 8 sunspots appeared on the sun’s disk towards the Earth (the side of the Sun visible from Earth). And today, NASA reported that one of the sunspots, AR3038, has doubled in size in the past 24 hours, creating a worrying situation for us. At its current size, if it were to project a single ray of sunlight across the surface of the Sun, the intense radiation could cause an immediate radio blackout on Earth, disrupting various services. We witnessed something similar a few weeks ago, when a class X solar flare disrupted radio communications in parts of Russia and Japan. So should we care? Continue reading.

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory observed this sudden change in sunspots. Later, Spaceweather.com also reported on the incident on its website. It said, “Yesterday, sunspot AR3038 was huge. Today, it’s huge. The fast-growing sunspot has doubled in size in just 24 hours.” NASA defines sunspots as temporary dark areas on the Sun’s surface that have reduced surface temperature caused by flux concentrations. These are highly unstable areas, prone to continuous explosion.

A sunspot threatens Earth with radio blackout causing sunspots

This particular sunspot, AR3038 (where AR stands for Active Region) is part of eight other sunspots that appeared on the sun’s disk on June 18. Although it is not an unusual sunspot. best, but in the last 24 hours it has grown to a gigantic size. Given its current size, it could very well soon release an X-class solar flare. For those who don’t know, solar flares are divided into A, B, C, M and X categories where A contains the weakest solar radiation while X contains the highest amount of solar radiation.

According to NASA, a class X solar flare can not only release enough radiation to disrupt the shortwave and radio frequencies used by various navigation systems, it can also cause cause problems for GPS systems used especially for aircraft and ships. While it’s currently uncertain whether a solar flare will definitely erupt, given the sunspot’s instability, it’s highly likely.
