Daniel Bell-Drummond made an immediate impact on London Spirit with 46 in their first game when they beat Southern Brave; Ross Whiteley’s 52 is not enough to help Brave push the limits

46 from Daniel Bell-Drummond’s 33 balls on his London Spirit debut and some impressive pitching helped the visitors to a nine-time win over Southern Brave at the Ageas Bowl…
Story of the game
Bell-Drummond hit the 46th mark to help Spirit win 147 from their 100 balls before Hampshire’s Liam Dawson, Brad Wheal, Mason Crane and Nathan Ellis created the defense that won Hawks the Vitality Blast earlier in the summer this.
Dawson, Wheal and Crane all won a wicket, along with non-Haw Jordan Thompson’s 2-32, and Ross Whiteley’s 52 were not enough as Brave dropped nine runs.
Spirit is three from three in the league, taking home the wooden spoon last year, while Brave holder lost 100% of his record at the Ageas Bowl in two editions of the competition.
The intrigue surrounding the Brave chase is how James Vince will fend off the Hawks’ bowling attack. That remained unanswered when another former Hampshire teammate, Glenn Maxwell, threw his first ball – the unlucky 13th golden duck of his T20/Hundred career.
Brave’s start took a turn for the worse when Quinton de Kock and Alex Davies met in the middle of the pitch with a broken stump for a clumsy run out to give the hosts a 4-2 lead.
Davies gets the scoreboard moving upwards with a four-six combo from Dawson, with Marcus Stoinis breaking through the covers and going straight before running past the Dawson spinner to trip over.
London Spirit 147-6 from 100 balls – Hogan (2-31 from 20 balls); Bell-Drummond (46 from 33 balls)
Southern Brave 138-7 from 100 balls – Thompson (2-32 from 20 balls); Whiteley (52 from 33 balls).

Davies departs in 36th as Crane lures him into the long run, while Wheal tilts Tim David back.
Whiteley, another Hampshire player, quietly advanced to a 50-ball challenge, bringing in a perfect finish at foot, but was cleared by Thompson’s next ball.
Brave needs 27 shots in the last 10. But despite James Fuller pulling that number down to 12 out of three, Thompson let him drop deep as Spirit’s 12-month rotation continued.
Prior to that, Spirit chose to gamble and owed the contributions of Maxwell, Bell-Drummond and Kieron Pollard to bring them up to 147 for six.
Maxwell, who survived the recapture with his review, and Bell-Drummond joined the fold after Adam Rossington had lifted Michael Hogan mid-ring and Zak Crawley switched to deep square feet to leave Spirit. 29 for two people.
The duo’s No 39 rolled together with a pair of four-man Maxwell, who first hit the ball with ease through the covers before opening offside again two balls later. He then used his upper body strength to steer Jacob Lintott through the deep mid lane.
The Australian added three more lines before hitting mid-game, with Eoin Morgan running back and forth in the absence of a forward.
Bell-Drummond, now in a 53-game partnership with Pollard, struggled to win 18 of 21 balls and dropped twice, though both were tough.
The slow start eventually led to 5 innings and 6 towering overtimes before he fell with 46 out of 33 balls at timeout. In the last 13 deliveries, Thompson was knocked out by Hogan with 24 deliveries.
Hero of the Match, Daniel Bell-Drummond (46 of 33 balls, 5×4 1×6)
“It’s good to get a game and I’m absolutely delighted to be launching Spirit.
“It’s early days, but it’s been a great start and we’re three from three. Whatever we do first, we’re back on our own and we’re pleased with the win.”
What did they say
Captain of the London Spirit, Eoin Morgan: “I’m really proud [of the bowlers]. We had a point below par for a long time… to have something to beat, but our pitchers were brilliant.
“We’re going to do this for as long as possible. Confidence is hard to come by, so we’re going to try to stick to this process as much as we can and hopefully it gets us where we want to be. .”
Captain James Vince of Southern Brave: “We’re in the same position as last year when we lost the first two games, so we know pretty much every game from now on is a must-win.
“But that’s the beauty of this tournament, every game has something and I’ll support the boys in doing it at the Oval on Sunday.”
What’s next?
Both teams are absent from their next matches on Sunday, with London Spirit make the trip to Northern turbocharger for a game at Headingley going on at 2:30pm.
Meanwhile, Southern Brave travel to London to challenge with Invincible oval shape later in the day. That match starts at 6pm.
