‘The Last of Us’ Episode 7 Recap: Ellie’s Devastating First Date

End of episode 6—What a spoilers, yes? While you’ll be happy to hear that Joel’s fate is revealed pretty quickly, the real focus of episode 7 isn’t on him at all. In this episode, we can finally learn more about Ellie, how she was bitten by the Infected, and who exactly Riley is—who Marlene (Merle Dandridge) talked about in the episode. first episode-To be.

Oh, and just a word of warning: No one will be left with dry eyes in any of the houses tonight. Do with what you will do.

(Warning: Spoiler ahead for Our last.)

After Joel (Pedro Pascal) passes out from blood loss from being stabbed by a college raider, he’s no longer so hot. Yes, he is still alive, but barely. We find out that Ellie (Bella Ramsey) was able to get him to safety in the basement of an abandoned house, but she’s trying to figure out how to help heal him. Joel encourages her to stay away from him, the idea of which evokes a traumatic and recent memory for Ellie.

This particular memory is not taken from two thousand and thirteen Our last video gamesbut it’s shorter, 2014 spin-off game leave behind. The indie adventure follows Ellie, as she searches a mall for supplies to treat Joel after he was injured in college. While exploring the mall, the game returns to Ellie’s first time in the mall—her first and last date with her best friend Riley.

The show bypasses Ellie’s sourcing in the mall to focus solely on her memories with Riley—a brilliantly creative decision that makes for a more impactful story.

We go back a few months to when Ellie met Joel or even learned that she was immune to cordyceps. One might mistake the new setting for high school gym goggles, but in reality, it’s Boston’s FedRA school. Ellie is a FEDRA practitioner who tends to fight a lot with her fellow practitioners. Kind of on brand, though.

Just as Ellie makes the decision to head straight down the narrow path and work towards becoming an officer, someone from her past shows up. Her best friend Riley (Storm Reid), who disappeared three weeks ago and secretly joined the Fireflies, returns to sneak Ellie out for “the best night of her life”. What could go wrong?

The two are nearly caught by a FedRA patrol along the way, and they also encounter a dead body. (They also steal alcohol from the dead.) Finally, they arrive at Riley’s unexpected location: an abandoned shopping mall. Little did Ellie know, but Riley discovered that when FEDRA connects a new block to the grid, the team also reconnects power to the mall. Seeing Ellie’s face light up when the mall reopened was priceless. And when your baby discovers the joys of riding the escalator, you’ll smile with her.

Ramsey really shines here, capturing Ellie’s childish spirit and, frankly, gay panic. The series is even more like the prologue to a sweet romantic comedy than a post-apocalyptic drama. By recording the escalator scene for A-ha’s “Take on Me” (regarding a particularly emotional part in The Last of Us Part II), writer/co-creator Neil Druckmann has catered directly to the fans of the game.

Riley tells Ellie that she has four mall miracles to show her. Of course, now are the five miracles behind the escalator. The first wonder is a complete working merry-go-round that Ellie and Riley ride for a lovely moment.

However, like all carousel games, it has to stop eventually. Ellie, who is still trying to figure out why Riley left FEDRA for Firefly, asks Riley if she really thinks the group can liberate the Boston Quarantine (QZ). Riley is pleased and tells her that she knows what her FEDRA mission will be — patrolling while everyone shovels manure — and she knows that there is no future there for her.

Ellie begins to understand why Riley left FedRA for Firefly, when she learns that life has been planned for her. But, they still have three more wonders to overcome. Next up: photo booth. It’s your vintage mall photo booth, but the perfect place to inspire more sexual confusion in Ellie. The scene is a near-perfect recreation of same scene in video game, with subtle changes. Personally, I love the addition of bunny ears—always a classic.

Now, get ready for the fourth miracle, because it is very confusing. Riley earns some big marzipan points and possibly the title of “best date planner ever” when she takes Ellie to a videogame with some games operate. The two end up going head-to-head in Life and Death War II—a game we know Ellie is obsessed with she mentioned it back in episode 3. Riley has freely hacked into the coin machine so that they have loads of money to use in the games. Seriously, she’s the best.

Endless game? Sweet relationship with your crush? Maybe the apocalypse isn’t so bad. Just kidding—it was horrible, and we were reminded exactly why while the two girls were fighting in life and death battle. Somewhere, in a dark corner of the mall, an Infected Person was awakened by a commotion. This revealing shot is a master class in horror directing, with its slow motion and ominous music creating exquisitely terrifying. It’s a stark reminder that even as this show turns light on, something scary still lurks nearby.

Before moving on to the mall’s fifth wonder, the two quickly detour because Riley gave Ellie a gift: that pun. can you remember from episode 4. Upon receiving this gift, Ellie realizes that the mall is not only where Riley shows her, but also where Riley protects Firefly’s arsenal of weapons and explosives.

Frustrated that Riley had hidden the real reason she knew the mall so well, Ellie left. Riley stops her by telling Ellie she’s going to Atlanta QZ, and tonight is her last night in Boston. Still annoyed and even more so, Ellie is finally back. Her return to Riley turns into a run when she hears screams, but she quickly realizes that the sound is not her friend in danger but a Halloween shop: the second wonder year of the mall.

After talking a bit more, Ellie accepted the fact that Riley was leaving. Before saying goodbye for the last time, the girls put on some Halloween masks and threw a dance party. Before long, however, Ellie could no longer contain her emotions. She takes off her mask and kisses Riley and tells her not to leave. Riley agrees to stay. It was a sweet moment of young love.

After all the horrors. The Infected from earlier rushed to attack Ellie and Riley. They eventually kill him, but not before they’re both bitten.

Broken by their fate, the two decide to become “all poetic and damn and just insane together.” However, we all know that only one has lost his mind, and we all know who has to kill the other. It was heartbreaking to watch Ellie start smashing the glass table they used to dance to.

The program then flips back to the current. Ellie won’t abandon another person she cares about, so she searches a lot to help Joel. In the end, she stumbled upon a needle and thread and used it to close his wound. He hasn’t come out of the woods yet, but he’s in better shape now.

This episode is another powerful reminder of how good it is Our last talking The most humane story. “Left Behind” belongs to Bella Ramsey and Storm Reid—and fans of the game it was taken from, too. Their performance was spectacular. In less than an hour, they made us laugh, cry, and love their doomed relationship and forget all the horrors of their world. It’s a great display of the range these two young stars are equipped with. If only we could see more of their love story.

What challenges will next week bring? You will have to wait and see. Until next Sunday. Endure and survive, buddy.
