The Last of Us’ grumpy couple deserve their own HBO show

HBO’s sixth episode Our Last opens at the death of winter, with bright white snow offering a change of scenery for otherwise the apocalypse is bleak and dull description program. But that’s not all that’s new—we’re introduced to a delightful couple in that snowy setting, who steal the episode with their uncanny charm.

The couple played by famous actor Graham Greene (Dancing with wolves) and Elaine Miles (North exposed), only appeared for about five minutes, but they made the most of that time. Their chemistry when the Marlon and Florence pair are off the charts, and their easy jokes with each other (and Joel and Ellie, the unwanted guests to their snowy bungalow) is an absolute pleasure.

Joel and Ellie stumble across their chalet on their way to Wyoming and are making their way to Joel’s brother. As Marlon entered the cabin, having just finished a successful rabbit hunt, Florence quietly let him know that they were not alone, giving him a clear view of their years together. Moments like that and giggles shared at Ellie’s teen energy speak more than words and successfully fill their years together for the viewer.

Jokes continue to pop up as well, based on their particular relationship and how they poke fun at each other to bring a much-needed level of human connection to the show. Upon seeing Joel, Marlon asks Florence why she didn’t shoot him. Continuing to rock in her rocking chair, she said nonchalantly, “The gun’s over there. By the way, he didn’t harm me.” Marlon said, “Yes, I have eyes.”

Later, Joel congratulated Marlon on finding a great place to hide in the apocalypse, but Marlon says they’ve been here since “before you were born, son. Get away from everyone.” Florence quickly interjects with “I don’t want to,” prompting Marlon to let out an exasperated sigh that tells us this is a conversation that has been going on over and over. It’s a beautiful window into a lifestyle different from what we’ve seen in most Our Last, a place full of cruel and selfish people just for “survival”. Marlon and Florence remind us that there are other ways to live together and the world around you, which Joel and Ellie learn again when they catch up with Tommy and her husband. What you value in life is up to you, and sometimes it’s just living in the middle of nowhere with the person you love.

The couple were in their own safe and happy world so when Ellie mentioned it Firefly, Florence exclaimed, “We get those in the summer.” Ellie quickly replied, “Not bugs, but humans.” Florence widened her eyes and said, “Are there any fireflies???” before both Marlon and Florence burst into laughter. Their concerns are different and softer than those of Ellie and Joel, something that is reflected later in the episode when Ellie reads a teenager’s diary from before the end of the world.

What’s particularly impressive is how Greene and Miles capture attention in this scene, because Our Last there were quieter moments, when Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were hanging out and able to do their job as performers. They’re garnering a screen presence on the show when it lets them do just that (and this episode in particular is a Ramsey highlight), but nothing compares to what Greene and Miles have working here as Marlon and Florence. Their tangible chemistry and easygoing, grumpy sense of humor reminded me of my grandparents, and it was one of the only moments on the show where I felt like I recognized the characters. Things are real people that I can meet in our world. It’s funny, but it resonates; it makes sense.

Sometimes, Our Last‘ fast-paced can detract from the character of the show, as the desire to put the first entire game into a TV season required them to move things up quickly. Other times, a five-minute glimpse gives you a lot. This is one of the later times, but HBO, I am not satisfied. Green-lighted a show about grumpy Graham Greene and Elaine Miles in the woods in no time.
