Police said the young man was lured into a £9.90 (R200) bet to see who could knock down a 35 per cent bottle of ABV wine on Sunday night.
The man managed to finish the bottle in less than two minutes but is said to have had an immediate breakdown.
In a clip shared online, the victim is seen being held by another man and swaying to one side as he drains the bottle.
There is also music to cheer those who like to drink faster.
South African police say an investigation into the tragic death is currently underway.
Police spokesman Brigadier General Motlafela Mojapelo spoke to the media today.
He said: “Police in Waterval outside Louis Trichardt have opened an investigative case following an apparent incident of alcohol abuse that took place at one of the local liquor stores in the village of Mashamba, where patrons were allegedly participated in what they called a ‘drinking contest’.
“The winner who can consume all the bottles of Jägermeister within the allotted time will receive R200 cash.
“One of them immediately collapsed afterwards and was taken to the local clinic where he was confirmed dead.”
Reacting to the video online, one person said: “Worst of all… it’s not fun at all… it’s a completely wrong game from all sides.”
Another said the man had “paid with his life”.
