The Lenexa family is grateful everyone is safe after a large tree crashed through the house, damaging the nursery

LENEXA, Kan. (KCTV) – A woman is grateful she got out of her home in Lenexa safely after a large tree crashed through the roof and landed inside a home near Brentwood Drive and Greenway Lane.

Tara Evans was relieved she was home alone when the tree fell on their garage, damaged her car and crashed through the back of the house. The tree went through the roof and a wall, right into the nursery. Evans and her relatives said the most important thing was that no one was injured.

“It just kept getting bigger and bigger, and then all of a sudden, the house shook,” Evans said. “I had to hold onto my bed. I heard a series of crashing and shattering sounds. Then I walked out into the hallway and I just saw a hole in the ceiling and insulation everywhere.”

She sees a lot of damage and can’t wait to get the pet out of the house safely.

“I’m glad I wasn’t in the room that was destroyed,” Evans said. “I’m really lucky to be alive today.”

As crews worked to remove heavy limbs and branches, the family took a closer look at the damage during the day. They were grateful that Evans’ cousin Jessica Snyder did not visit her son. He often slept in the damaged nursery room when they were in town.

Snyder said: ‘Just seeing the tree go straight over the crib was to know that if he had been there, things could have been really bad. “It’s been hard to get there mentally, but we’re very, very grateful that it’s still the way it is.”

Snyder and her son plan to visit next week.

“By the grace of God, it was just time,” Snyder said.

Evans said: ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so lucky nothing happened to me and nothing went into my bedroom.

Several of Evans’ neighbors were also clearing trees and debris from their homes Wednesday.
