‘The Lost Daughter,’ ‘Dopesick’ Named Best Adaptation – The Hollywood Reporter

Daughter is gone and Dopesick won top honors at the 34th annual virtual USC Libraries Scripter Awards – and the second on Saturday night.

The Scripter Awards honor the best print-to-screen adaptations. Both the author and the screenwriter were celebrated. So, Daughter is gone Screenwriters Maggie Gyllenhaal and Elena Ferrante, the author of the novel of the same name, shared the film and television awards that went to both Danny Strong, who wrote the episode “The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Dopesickand Beth Macy for the book non-fiction Dopesick: Agents, Physicians and Drug Company of America inspired the television series.

Other film nominations are:

  • Sand dunes (Writer Eric Roth, Jon Spaihts and Denis Villeneuve), based on the novel of the same name (author Frank Herbert)
  • Pass (Writer Rebecca Hall), based on the novel of the same name (author Nella Larsen)
  • The power of the dog (Writer Jane Campion), based on the novel of the same name (author Thomas Savage)
  • Macbeth’s Tragedy (Writer Joel Coen), based on the play Macbeth (playwright William Shakespeare)

Meanwhile, the other nominees for the TV Series Script Award (which was only introduced in 2016), are:

  • Domestic worker volume “Dollar Store” (writer Molly Smith Metzler), based on memoirs Maid: Hard Work, Loy Pay and a Mother’s Will to Survive (author Stephanie Land)
  • Station 11 episode “Wheel of Fire” (screenwriter Patrick Somerville), based on the novel Station 11 (author Emily St. John Mandel)
  • Underground Railroad episode “Indiana Winter” (screenwriter Barry Jenkins), based on the novel Underground Railroad (author Colson Whitehead)
  • WandaVision episode “Filmed in front of a live studio audience” (screenwriter Jac Schaeffer), based on Marvel Comics (characters created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby)
