The new Acura Integra was never supposed to be a classic car

NS New Acura Integrated Prototype should never be thought of as a nostalgic or nostalgic design process. It could easily be assumed that it is, like AcuraThe message that led to the big reveal rested heavily on the legacy of the Integra nameplate. Are from model name embossed in the bumper, to the video about the transfer manual transmission of older models, Acura tugged at our hearts.

And then the cover came out last week, and despite very subtle signs hinting at old Integrations here and there, new car doesn’t look like the old ones at all. Unlike the designers of the new retro-tastic Nissan Z and Ford Bronco, Acura decided to create something completely new and different.

“So, admittedly, when we started planning this car, we never created a Classic Integrated,” says Acura product planner Jonathan Rivers. Automatic log. “We actually looked at it from the point of view of saying, if Integra never left the lineup, how would it develop? How will it change over the years? We think this is the result of that.”

There will never be a two-door coupe, because as Rivers pointed out to us these days, coupes don’t sell. However, sport is popular – just look at it absolute number their from Germany these days – and it suits the customers Acura is trying to capture with Integrations.

“The target audience is millennials with active lifestyles, so they need storage space but also want a great car for the occasional canyon road trip,” said Rivers. speak. “Again, across generations, Integration is just that.”

For any naysayers throwing their hands over Integration seems like a fancy civic, we have two objections. One, that’s exactly What is integration?. Literally it was badged and sold as a Honda’s motobike in many other countries, and its bones were always based on the Civic. Such was the history of the Integra, and although Acura didn’t officially launch and say so, it certainly remains that way today.

In terms of design, you might think that the photos make it look a bit too close to New 11th generation Civic Hatchback? Well, pictures on the internet don’t always tell the full story of a car design.

“There is no metal plate shared with the four-door or five-door Civic,” explains Rivers. “And I attest to that, it’s like a mix of those two body styles, because if you really have five doors [Civic Hatchback] besides this car, it’s significantly different. This is an inch or two longer than the sedan. Because we’ve given the roof such a sloping line, it gives the hatchback a five-door feel, but it’s really a sedan in shape, and also has the versatility of a hatchback. ”

That point about the Integra being an inch or two longer than the sedan is also an important differentiator. The new Civic Sedan is already 5 inches longer than the Hatchback, making the Overall Dimensions more like the Civic Hatch XXL. It is not a small car, in keeping with the previous point of Rivers that Acura was trying to create today Integrated, not a remake of the old one. NS buy car The public’s taste in automotive dimensions has essentially increased over the years since the Integra ceased production and the new Integra has managed to catch up in that respect.

We were trying to see if Acura would give us some indication of when the Integra revival effort first took hold in the company, and while we don’t have a rough day, we’re not. Rivers shared with us how the process went.

“The name came up during development when we realized we could make a car worthy of the name,” says Rivers. “So this is not a marketing exercise, we didn’t just focus on it last minute. If we have components, if we have some design cues. If we have something as sporty and fun and versatile as the cars before it, it’s the car.”

If you combine the elements we know now, Rivers makes it hard to call this anything other than an Integra: 1.5-liter turbo, six-speed manual, limited-slip differential, body hatchback car, good handling and affordable price. In fact, those preliminary specs and features suggest that we’re going for something underpinning the Integration, which leagues better and more fun than any of the previous Base Integration models. this. Old base Integras aren’t super sports cars, and although you might have a picture of praise the CHEAP type in your head, that high-po model is not “Integrated” meaning 99% of the time.

And while the new Integration is well-liked by many add-on enthusiasts, the Internet’s response hasn’t been exactly positive. Acura knows that it will be difficult to please everyone.

“How do you balance it where you please people who know the car, know the name, the heritage? But then how do you also appease someone who will walk in authorized dealer and go, ‘this sounds sweet. I like that, “without any prior connection,” Rivers told us. “

Getting the name of any old model back to gold in the eyes of enthusiasts is a daunting task, but we (and especially your author) are excited about the new Integration. And if an Acura-ized Civic Si Hatchback is still not enough for you, take a minute for it, as more performance will come. We asked Rivers about the future of Type WILL for Integrations and below you will find his feedback. It’s a safe bet to say than is on the road.

“As Jon Ikeda (Acura Brand Manager) alluded to and the rest of the lineup, that’s the direction we’re trying to move forward with this, so… when you look at this car and foundation for this car… it’s a great performance platform. “
