The numbers prove it: MoonSwatch is the watch of 2022
In our December issuewe called Omega x Swatch MoonSwatch watch of the year. The watch that helped customers get their hands on a diet version of Omega’s titanic Speedmaster has made an undeniable impact – but now the Swatch team reports its impact on profits has also been huge. Omega and Swatch sold over a million MoonSwatch units by 2022, Bloomberg report. That’s a lot of Missions to Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and the Sun. Even better: MoonSwatch also pours rocket fuel into the Speedmaster line in general.
When MoonSwatch was first announced, skeptical prediction that the $260 bio-ceramic version of the watch would devalue the original line. Wrong! In fact, MoonSwatch had the opposite effect of Speedmaster, starting around $6,300, or about 25 times the value of the former. “Following the hype of MoonSwatch, the entire Omega Speedmaster collection, such as the Moonwatch models, has also benefited from growing interest,” the Swatch Group wrote in a press release this week.
What skeptics may not have imagined is how the MoonSwatch will be received by most collectors. Customers continue to line up to buy these products at Swatch stores, and executives at Swatch don’t see things slowing down anytime soon. “We still see double-digit growth potential in the US,” said Nick Hayek, CEO of Swatch. Bloomberg. And even those who don’t line up appreciate the effort to establish a new generation of watch collectors. MoonSwatch is the envy of the industry: “Their collaboration is a great idea,” says François-Henry Bennahmias, CEO of Audemars Piguet, Talk to Luxury Tribune End of AugustThis does not affect the integrity of Omega at all, contrary to what you may have heard.
