Washington citizens are considering the possibility of trading Juan Soto, and a sweepstakes favorite has popped up.
The New York Post’s Jon Heyman reports that the San Diego Padres is early favorites to land Soto. While some people came up with the idea of a blockbuster swap involving Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr., a person familiar with Padres’ thinking told Heyman they wanted to pair Soto with Tatis.
In theory, Padres could shortlist CJ Abrams, pitcher MacKenzie Gore and some prospects in a deal with Soto. It’s not clear if that will be enough for Washington citizens.
The New York Yankees and New York Mets are also expected to join the mix. As Heyman notes, the Yankees are keen to get the 23-year-old midfielder as potential insurance in the event of Aaron Judge’s departure. The Bronx Bomber can certainly afford the kind of extension Soto is said to be looking for.
Soto is said to be turn down a big deal from Country. Now he is say not satisfied with the team after information about the situation was leaked, that could spur further trade talks.
Soto entered Sunday’s game .250 with 19 home runs, 42 RBI and 0.896 OPS. He has two years left as a referee.
